"A la Carte Green” is about making green choices on a daily basis, in a manner that works for you. It's about trying and choosing greener options "a la carte" because there is no one size fits all solution. Not everyone can walk to work or have solar panels, but we can choose to bring waste-free lunches, or to dry our clothes in the sunshine. You get the picture. Small “A la Carte Green” choices made by each person will have positive impacts. Which green options will you choose?

Glug Glug Glug, GUSH....
The explosion of the British Petroleum oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico on April 20, 2010 and the resulting oil "spill" should make Americans think harder about the sources of energy that we use. Oil is currently spewing from a 5”-6” diameter pipe under nearly 20,000 psi at a rate of 200,000 gallons a day and may get much larger if the ocean floor wellhead fails. Some are saying as much as 100,000 barrels a day. The current Administration's energy agenda seems to be hell bent on drilling for domestic oil, but at what cost? Obviously there was no "what if plan" in place, because if there was much of the current oil "spill" would have been cleaned up instead of continuing to glug, glug, glug into the Gulf of Mexico.
This spill has not been contained thus far, and hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions of gallons of crude may wash ashore polluting marshes and estuaries, and killing plants, animals, fish and birds in it's path. The Gulf of Mexico and the Louisiana coast are special biomes, and it is horrific, and unthinkable that there is no plan in place to protect these important natural treasures. Not only is there an impact on wildlife, but also on the fishing industry and tourism.
When will our country put time, energy, and resources into CLEAN energy? When will lobbyists lobby for things that are economically wise and good for our country AND the Earth? When will the public DEMAND clean technologies, and sources of energy?
When I saw the following link, and this "breaking news story", I shook my head and chuckled to myself...if ONLY we could replace the oil rigs with "leaking" wind farms!

Would a wind farm spew millions of gallons of oil and cause such destruction and damage? NO. Would solar power result in the destruction of marshes, fish, plants, and animals? NO. It is time that our Administration comes CLEAN and GREEN with our National Energy Policies and Agenda.

Happy 40th Earth Day!
What will you do to celebrate Earth Day? You could take a walk in a park to enjoy the green-ness around you, sit still, watch and listen to the birds, do a craft of recycled materials, pledge to use only green cleaning products, choose an Earth-friendly product next time you shop, recycle everything you can, catch your rainwater and use for your garden, compost, turn off all unused gadgets, turn off the lights, switch to CFL bulbs (and recycle them properly when done), change to LED lights, the list goes on! Whatever you choose to do will be one small green babystep in the right direction, and if we all make those babysteps it will add up big for ourselves and planet. Enjoy the day!
Colleges Go GREEN
So it's that time of year when Juniors are looking around at colleges, and besides SAT scores, tuition, room and board, fees, student body makeup, etc., your teen might be interested to know some information about the "green-ness" of their prospective college. The Princeton Review's Guide to 286 Green Colleges is chock-full of information about 286 college's and Green Facts about each. Information such as waste diversion rate, % of school energy from renewable resources, % of school grounds maintained organically, % food budget spent on local/organic food, and whether the school has a sustainability committee, etc. are included.
One example is Bentley University in Waltham, MA. In the book, Bentley highlights and boasts about the Bentley Green Society, a student run organization with over 200 students, that 50% campus buildings have Energy Star rating of 69% or higher, and about a solar wall on outside of their gym center which saves 116,000 kilowatt hours of energy/year, and more.
